11:03 pm
>> we hit it off right away. she was really funny, really outgoing. >> they played together from 2001 through 2003. leanna said norwood was an exceptional soccer player. in fact, she was the first player in school history to win all conference honors. >> pretty much the best female defender i've ever seen. >> she said norwood was a talented and aggressive defender on the field but very troubled off the field. >> she'd be like sweet and funny one minute and then weird the next. >> she said especially when they went out together and things started coming up missing. >> then sometimes they would take cash out of the wallet and i never caught her red handed. i think i caught her right after she did it and i asked for my money back, but i never said, you know, i never got mad at her because she was so intimidating. >> she said she never got the money back. then there were things missing in the locker room. norwood was accused but no one ever caught her in the act. yuss says the coach and athletic director knew of the
11:04 pm
allegations. >> our coach made her apologize to me personally and we didn't really get into it. i was so nervous and scared and the whole time i still loved the girl like a sister. >> but without actual proof she says nothing was ever done. a lot of frustration yu -- through out of frustration yuss said she left the team after her junior year. >> i wanted to turn her into the police even though i was scared. i wanted to and my dad advised me not to. he's like who knows what this girl is capable of, you know. she could come back and kill you. >> now when norwood was arrested and charged with killing her co-worker, yesterday she immediately thought about her interaction with her former friend. >> if we go down the path there are consequences with all this going on in the locker room, everybody knew about it, how come she wasn't kicked off the team? >> there are a couple things, two things, there was never any proof she stole anything from the locker room, so there was never any charge and the second thing in this is after she

apologized to the team yuss said they had a chance to vote her off the team. but they kept her on and yuss left the team. another question you might ask yourself, what could lead someone to commit such a violent crime? joining us is forensic psychologist lisa van susteren. thank you for joining us. the degree of this violence we know the victim was hit in the head with a hammer more times than the coroner could count. it's been reported her spinal column was severed, her throat shashed allegedly by a woman. what -- slashed allegedly by a woman. what gets someone to that level? >> hard to say in this particular case. we don't know a lot about her history and indeed she has not pled guilty, although she has said that she could not say why she had done this, so implied, of course, that she is admitting it, but until we have real specific knowledge about many experiences growing up it's hard to profile her specifically. however, what we do know is
11:06 pm
that she has long had troubles getting along with other people apparently on and off and that she had a a change in jobs and that there was spec -- had a change in jobs and that there was speculation she was stealing before. was she a ticking time bomb? it's clear if indeed she committed this murder that she was a ticking time bomb. it's hard from a human perspective to understand something like this. we do know that scientists can talk about it, however. >> we always hear this just snapped diagnosis. is that possible at this level of rage to just snap? >> well, what we see is just snapped, but if you would talk to experts who are versed in the neurobiology of violence, they will say that this has been brewing for a long time, that the moral circuitry that keeps us from acting out violently is defective in people who have a pattern of aggression or at least it's
11:07 pm
correlated with that. for example, they have a diminished fear response. so whereas we growing up avoid doing bad things as we'll get in trouble, they will have a diminished response to that. whereas we will look at emotions that we have will be angry and sometimes have murderous rage, we don't act upon it because we have emotional control. people who are violent have less control or less regulation and third of all as we get older and leave our childhood, we recognize the compassion and em pathic element. we do the right thing just out of being decent human beings. we see in violence and people who act out aggressively these systems are altered, defective with correlation with violence. i can't say that's the case with her, but i wouldn't rule it out. >> we'll have to see if they do a mental evaluation. they haven't yet. dr. lisa van u.s. is earn, thank you. a -- van u.s. is earn, thank you.
